Lyman Whitaker • Bio
Lyman Whitaker created the first Wind Sculpture in a moment of creative play in the early 1980’s. He had no idea how well-received his whirling whimsical sculptures would become. In life, Lyman’s practice has always been to take the next step, and the steps have come at a joyful pace.
Lyman holds over 40 years experience in sculpture. He graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Utah. There he studied under Arvard Fairbanks and Angelo Carvaglia, learning classical sculpture techniques as well as contemporary design. His works demonstrate a unique working knowledge of materials and their application.
Lyman, his wife Stacy Christensen and their two young children reside in the desert Southwest. He loves the desert’s sLyman Whitaker Photoolitude and the intensity of the climate.
The receptivity to his work (sold through fine art galleries) has allowed Lyman to create an inspiring modern studio whre he works with his wife Stacy and his brother John Whitaker. Together, they have created a productive art network. Public and private installations exist throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia.
Lyman's sculptures have an organic and mystical theme in line with his life philosophy. Concerned about the sustainability of our culture's present systems, Lyman's strongest wish is to have his artwork symbolize a move toward better solutions in our relationship with our environment.
Asked if his wind sculptures generate power, he responds that their job is to generate joy.
