Biography

Kim Whitesides

Artist

To native Utahan Kim Whitesides art is a language, an opportunity for his vision to inspire others. He uses some abstraction, combined with the fractural breakup of image – as tools for distilling and intensifying the natural geometry of the Southwest. His work enhances the homes of Robert Redford, Daniel Melnick, Marshall Freidman and Mel and Wendy Lavitt and others who appreciate Kim’s acuity.

“Often an artist is measured not just by skill, but by a particular way of seeing. I have known, collected and admired Kim Whitesides for over twenty-five years. His work has always remained on the cutting edge of social trends and new technologies. His subjects are always just either side of the middle, even when they are main stream. Kim enjoys the delight of a rich imagination, a purely original view and the support of a fine skill.”

~Robert Redford

Kim made an impact in the art community at a very young age. While still in high school – his work as a graphic artist included the creation of celebrity portraits, which led to purchases by and friendships with a number of musical artists of the time. His formal training came from the University of Utah and The Art Center College of Design, Los Angeles. In the late “60s and through the “70s Kim lived and worked in New York City as an illustrator and graphic designer. During this period his paintings appeared in publications from Playboy to Rolling Stone, and he received numerous awards, including two from the Art Directors’ Club of New York. It was also at this time that he began a period of bold work with the airbrush that emphasized the simplified spaces and clean lines of art deco and art moderne, for which he gained a national reputation.

Kim’s style has evolved through several mediums over the past three decades, including graphite drawings, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, oils and now egg tempera. Driven by a hunger to expand his skills Kim continues to grow as an artist, he feels his art is constantly opening doors on new vistas. “Each medium has been like learning a new language – and has spawned the desire to become fluent.” Living in the West and painting its landscapes is the completion of a cycle; allowing the use of his considerable experience and skill to explore a lifelong fascination with the far horizon line, to communicate a feeling of immeasurable space. Kim’s translations express the true picture as well as the possibility.
